JCC Trade & Investment Committee

Dear JCC Members,

Invitation to JCC/JETRO/PwC Seminar

Securing resources and operational management in the rapidly changing European economy, and;

2023 Dutch Tax Reform

JCC organizes the seminar “Securing resources and operational management in the rapidly changing European economy, and;

2023 Dutch Tax Reform” with the cooperation of JETRO and PwC on October 26.

Despite the hope of economic recovery following the lifting of COVID-related restrictions, European economies are currently faced with increasing inflation due to energy and resource price increases following sanctions against Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. Interest rates are also set to increase going forward with the European Central Bank deciding to raise its policy rate, leading to a real risk of “stagflation” setting in. Businesses from all industries are simultaneously faced with chronic personnel shortages, as was seen in the disruption in airports across Europe this summer. All this leads to increasing uncertainty in the European economic environment, with the development and maintenance of stable governance structures of ever-growing importance for businesses.

In this seminar, an economist with PwC Netherlands will first discuss recent economic developments in Europe. Next, PwC Consulting’s lead for Japanese businesses in Europe will discuss the European labour market and what can be done by businesses. Specialists from PwC will also discuss governance structures and strengthening for European subsidiaries with reference to actual cases. Finally, our secondees from PwC Japan will provide updates on the 2023 Dutch Tax Reform announced in September, the new Dutch Transfer Pricing Decree announced in July, and accounting and legal developments.

Latest Economic trends in EuropeAn economist’s view on the latest developments in Europe and the Netherlands, and the challenges faced by businesses
30 min. Mr. Remko Blom
Senior manager, PwC Netherlands(English)
Whilst countries across Europe are continuing their economic recovery following the lifting of COVID restrictions, the shift away from Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine and subsequent economic and financial sanctions continues to gather pace. Increases in resource and energy costs have led to an increase in inflation, with the European Central Bank announcing that they will raise their policy rate in response. As a result, “stagflation” is expected to hit the European economy towards the end of 2022 with both prices increasing and the economy in slowdown. The scene for Japanese multinationals operating in Europe is distinctly uncertain.

In this session, we will discuss the latest economic developments and the important issues that businesses need to address.
