JCC/ JETRO/Bird&Bird – EU Data Act and Risk & Compliance Seminar

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands (JCC), in cooperation with JETRO Amsterdam, is pleased to invite Japanese companies to the above‑titled seminar on EU regulatory compliance, to be held on Wednesday, 6 May (afternoon, Netherlands time).

In recent years, the EU has introduced and strengthened a series of regulations—particularly in the digital and risk and compliance fields—that have a direct and far‑reaching impact on corporate activities. In particular, developments such as the implementation of the EU Data Act, as well as regulatory initiatives relating to financial crime prevention, corporate crime, directors’ and officers’ liability, and greenwashing, are becoming increasingly significant for Japanese companies operating within the EU or maintaining business relationships with EU counterparts.

These regulations go beyond mere legal compliance and are increasingly driving broader changes in corporate governance frameworks, risk management practices, and even business models and transaction structures. In areas such as data utilisation, selection of cloud services, data sharing with third parties, and the responsibilities of directors and officers, the effectiveness of regulatory responses can have a direct impact on a company’s medium‑ to long‑term competitiveness and reputation.  As a result, there is a growing need for companies to accurately understand the latest regulatory developments and to respond from a strategic, medium‑ to long‑term perspective.

In this seminar, we will first focus on the EU Data Act, addressing key issues that are of particular practical relevance to Japanese companies, including data‑sharing obligations imposed on IoT manufacturers and data holders, as well as switching rights (portability and exit rights) in relation to cloud and SaaS services. From both B2B and B2C perspectives, we will outline practical response points across a wide range of industries, including electronics, machinery, and automotive sectors.

In the second half of the seminar, we will turn our attention to risk and compliance / corporate crime, investigations, and compliance‑related topics, providing a practical overview of key risks that Japanese companies may face. These include financial crime, criminal liability of directors and officers, internal investigations, dawn raids, trade‑based money laundering risks, and greenwashing‑related regulatory and enforcement trends.

In addition to sharing the latest regulatory information, the seminar will highlight practical considerations and insights to support companies in reviewing and strengthening their future compliance strategies. Rather than viewing EU regulatory compliance solely as a risk management exercise, this seminar aims to provide participants with perspectives on how compliance efforts can contribute to stronger governance and enhanced business competitiveness. We sincerely hope many of you will take this opportunity to attend.

Following the seminar, a networking session will be held to facilitate the exchange of views among speakers and participants. We encourage you to make use of this opportunity for information sharing and professional networking. Please note that capacity at the venue is limited, and registration will close once the maximum number of participants has been reached. We therefore recommend registering at your earliest convenience.

Should you have any questions regarding the seminar, please do not hesitate to contact the JCC Secretariat. We very much look forward to receiving your registration and to welcoming you to the event.
