JCC/KPMG Sustainability, AI and Tax update seminar

JCC/KPMG  Sustainability, AI and Tax update seminar

JCC Investment Business Environment Subcommittee

Dear JCC member,

We would like to invite you to join the JCC /KPMG Seminar on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

In January, the European Commission announced its Competitiveness Compass, which provides a strategic and clear framework to guide its activities. It lists three core action areas: innovation, decarbonization, and security.

In terms of innovation, the main pillars are the construction of AI Gigafactories to develop AI models that comply with EU regulations and the promotion of AI applications in the industrial sector.

In terms of decarbonization, the aim is to develop a decarbonization approach that emphasizes competitiveness and promote clean technology and circular business models in order to promote access to clean and competitively priced energy.

As one of the measures to enable the achievement of these core action areas, the simplification of regulations is also included in the contents of the Competitiveness Compass. In February, the European Commission proposed an omnibus proposal to simplify the regulations. The postponement of the application of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) has already been decided, and a reduction in the number of companies subject to the Directive and simplification of the content itself have been proposed.

In light of the above, this seminar will cover the following topics.

We will begin by providing an overview of the EU Competitiveness Compass and the Omnibus Proposal from a sustainability perspective, followed by an explanation of the strategic direction companies should consider in light of the Omnibus Proposal.

In the next session, we will focus on decarbonization, one of the most closely watched topics within the EU Compass. We will discuss macro-level trends in Europe and explore how companies can align their initiatives with these trends to advance their decarbonization efforts.

Thereafter, we will set out various basic concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), and dive into the most important aspects of EU AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive legal framework governing AI, and how to best ensure compliance with the EU AI Act.

Finally, we will explain the latest tax updates, focusing on areas that are likely to affect Japanese companies.

We hope that this seminar will be useful as part of your information gathering efforts.

We look forward to your participation.
